CHAN 2018

Hosts Morocco and Northwest neigbours Mauritania will tonight get the ball rolling at the 5th Championship of African Nations, otherwise known as CHAN, which has proved to be a good platform for players featuring in their domestic leagues to show case their talent.

It will be the first official game between the two countries and it will be played in near freezing temperatures.

Kick-off time at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca is 8.30 pm Nigerian time.

The prize money for the overall winners of this bi-ennial championship is $1.25 million.

Home team Morocco, Zambia, 2014 winners Libya and Uganda are among the favourites to succeed champions DR Congo, who failed to qualify for CHAN 2018.

Mauritania, Equatorial Guinea and Namibia will be making their debut in the 16-team championship, which began nine years ago in Cote d’Ivoire.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will also debut by the quarterfinals of the competition to determine game-defining moments.

Hosts Morocco head Group A along with Mauritania, Guinea and Sudan, while Group B has Cote d’Ivoire, Zambia, Uganda and Namibia.

Group C has Libya, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and Rwanda, who hosted the previous tournament two years ago.

Angola, Cameroon, Congo and Burkina Faso are housed in Group D.
