Eagles vs England at Wembley November 1995

England boss Gareth Southgate has said he is pleased to come up against Nigeria on June 2 at Wembley as the friendly will afford his team a chance to test themselves against different styles and different experiences ahead of the World Cup.

England have clashed twice at full international level with Nigeria – a 1-0 win against the Super Eagles in 1995 at Wembley and a goalless draw at the 2002 World Cup.

The Three Lions are drawn against Tunisia, Panama and Belgium in the first round of Russia 2018.

“We’ve mostly played European opposition up to now and the Brazil game acted as a reminder that we need to challenge ourselves in different ways as a team,” he explained.

“We’re going into a World Cup where we will play African and Central American opposition so we get that with the games against Nigeria and Costa Rica but it’s not just about the games we’ve got in the group but hopefully beyond that as well.

“We want to expose the team to different styles and different experiences.”
