Manu Garba – Powerful connections could now see him keep his job as Nigeria U17 coach

SCORENigeria has specially gathered that on the intervention of a former sports minister, Manu Garba may now be re-installed as coach of the Golden Eaglets, while Abdul Maikaba be moved up to the U20s, the Flying Eagles.

Maikaba, who led Akwa United to win a second Aiteo Cup recently, has already been announced as the new Golden Eaglets coach.

But we have since learnt that after intense lobbying that included bringing in a former sports minister, who is now a chieftain of the ruling party APC, Manu Garba could now be announced as the new Eaglets coach.

Manu was interviewed for his old post, but his failure to qualify the country to the last U17 AFCON worked against him and he was not considered to keep his job.

A top official told SCORENigeria: “From all indications, Manu will soon be announced as the Eaglets coach and Maikaba will be moved to the Flying Eagles.

“It’s a case of connections in high places as the former sports minister worked hand-in-hand with one of the top officials on the NFF executive committee to ensure that Manu retains his job.”

Former Nigeria U20 coach Manu has been involved with the Eagles since he assisted Godwin Izilien in 2005.

He was also an assistant when Nigeria won the 2007 FIFA U17World Cup in Korea and six years later as head coach he was also led the Eaglets to land the coveted global championship.
