Lucas Alcaraz sacked by Algeria

Algeria, who face Nigeria in a final 2018 World Cup qualifier next month, have fired Spanish coach Lucas Alcaraz six months into the job.

His contract was to have lasted till 2019.

An official told AFP that the executive committee of the Football Association of Algeria (FAF) unanimously voted for the dismissal of Alcaraz.

The 51-year-old Alcaraz, who has twice handled La Liga club Granada CF, was in charge of Algeria’s last three World Cup qualifiers, which they all lost.

Last month, Algeria lost home and away to Zambia and last weekend, the North Africans fell 2-0 in Cameroon.

He was the fourth coach appointed by Algeria since the departure of Vahid Halilhodzic, who guided the team to the Round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
