Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr has spoken exclusively to SCORENigeria on his plans for next month’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against African champions Cameroon, admitting it will be “a big challenge”.
He also speaks on his call-ups for the Cameroon showdown led by fit-again Mikel Obi.
He will also praise the home-based Eagles for qualifying for CHAN 2018 in Kenya.
SCORENIGERIA: Good day, coach.
GERNOT ROHR: Good day.
Good to know that Nigeria have qualified for CHAN 2018 in Kenya after defeating Benin 2-1 on aggregate, what are your impressions about the game?
It was a good game. Everybody saw that we scored two nice goals and it was a deserved victory because we dominated, but now we will focus on the next game.
It’s finished now, now we focus on Cameroon game. This will be a big challenge for us.
Cameroon game has been a talk of the town, how optimistic is coach Gernot Rohr ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against the indomitable Lions?
A coach is always optimistic, we have recovered some injured players – Mikel Obi is coming back, we missed him so much in the last game.
We have also Victor Moses and (Leon) Balogun, both are also coming back from injuries, we missed all of them but unfortunately we don’t have our goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who is sick, but we will do it for him, we want to win for him and to bring him with us to Russia.
Coach, looking at the home-based Eagles were you impressed with any of them as to now pick them for the Cameroon games?
Yes, there will be few of them in the big group. I have 28 players to prepare for Cameroon game. They did well.
It’s not easy for them because the level in the league is not the same as international football, but we believe that they can do well.
Some of them already came with us, you know that Ibrahim Alhassan (‘Muazzam’) was already with us against Togo and South Africa.
We have also Ezenwa already and another one will come out in our group of 28 which will come out tomorrow (Monday).
