How the all-powerful Egyptians ousted Hayatou

FIFA boss Gianni Infantino may have endorsed the ouster of Issa Hayatou as CAF president, but we hear that it was the Egyptian government who really made it happen.

Ahmad – CAF newly elected President

We all know that there has been no love lost between Hayatou and the CAF host nation especially after CAF awarded their broadcasting rights to BeIN Sports ahead of a bid by Presentation Sports, which the Egyptian government has interest in.

A court suit has already been instituted in Cairo against Hayatou and the CAF general secretary on account of the award of this broadcasting rights.

Presentation Sports’ proposal included buying the broadcasting rights of the Africa Cup of Nations, the CAF Champions League, the CAF Confederation Cup, the CAF Super Cup, the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations. This will be till 2029 and it will cost the Egyptian company $600 million.

Many questions have been asked about why an Egyptian company would present such an expensive proposal during an economic crisis, doubting the political motives behind it.

“Egypt is the main key driver of the Middle East and it remains the pulse of the Arab world. The fact that an Egyptian company obtains the broadcasting rights of matches indicates a lot, including Egypt’s recovery from its crisis as it has come back to the African arena,” Mahmoud al-Sayyed, a lawmaker and member of the Youth and Sports Committee in the House of Representatives, told Al-Monitor.

According to Sayyed, this step will attract large investments, multiply Egyptian media’s audience and enhance Egypt’s image worldwide, which will consequently have a positive political outcome.

Sayyed said that the broadcasting of African matches should be marketed properly in Africa and the Arab world. This would help market Egypt politically as a stable country that enjoys security.

Sayyed called for broadcasting ads before and after matches to show that the Egyptian street supports the current regime.

He added, “Broadcasting African matches is a giant step toward the recovery of Egyptian tourism to where it was in the past, as well as propagating it in a way that suits Egypt’s ancient civilization.”

Against this background, it was understandable why the Egyptians commanded all the huge resources at their disposal to ensure Hayatou’s 29-year reign ended in Addis Ababa.

Hayatou has been toppled and many of our African brothers can now boast of fatter bank balances they never ever dreamt of…

And now can you guess who will head the CAF secretariat in Cairo after this hefty investment?

When white goat failed to halt S’ooting poor home run

Yesterday, Shooting Stars fans sparked off wild jubilation after their darling club snatched a late win against champions Rangers to ensure they do not record a fourth home draw this season.

For the fans, all the imagined curses against the club and some of their unpopular management officials had finally been broken.

Shooting Stars prostrate before Ibadan fans yesterday – Were they begging for the curse to be lifted on them?

But we also know of the story of a few weeks ago when some of the supporters demanded a white goat be brought so that whatever the spell caused by a curse against ‘The Oluyole Warriors’ will be dismantled.

The white goat was bought, but Abia Warriors still came down to Ibadan to hold the home team to a draw…
