Rangers Sunday failed to advance to the money-spinning stage of the CAF Champions League even after they beat Zamalek 2-1 at home as they crashed out of the competition 5-3 on aggregate.

The Nigeria champions will now playoff for a place in the group phase of the second-tier Confederation Cup.

However, Zamalek pegged the home team back in the 71st minute through striker Bazem Morsi.

And three minutes from time, Godwin Aguda converted penalty for Rangers to win 2-1, but the damage had been done in Cairo a week ago when thye fell 4-1 to the Egyptian giants.

On Saturday, Nigeria’s other flag bearers in the Champions League, Rivers United, also failed to reach the group phase of the competition after they lost 4-3 on aggregate to Al Merreikh of Sudan.
